To the Longing in a Man's Heart

I cannot think but that the state of Man
Improved would be had he this glorious thing
Which God hath put into His righteous plan,
Which blood and bones and heart and poets sing.
'Tis joy to sense its presence near to thee,
And mirth which flows unbounded in the soul.
Thou canst have freedom and can truly see
That thing which makes a Man be truly whole.
'Twould be for me this object of desire
'Tis now to be forever in my mind.
It is within my heart a flaming fire:
The longing every man does long to find.
You wonder what can move my soul to sing?
A lady near; that is this glorious thing.
